What is JSON-LD and why does it matter for SEO?

JSON-LD (JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data) is Google's recommended format for adding structured data to web pages. It tells search engines what your content means — enabling rich results like FAQ expandable panels, review stars, breadcrumb trails, and article author information directly in search results.

Pages with rich results consistently see higher click-through rates (CTR) — often 20–30% more clicks for the same ranking position — because they take up more visual space and provide more information at a glance.

Which schema type should I use?

Organization — add to every page of your site via the global header/footer. It tells Google who runs the site, establishes your Knowledge Panel, and is the foundation other schemas reference.

Article / BlogPosting — add to every blog post or article page. Enables author attribution, publication date display, and article carousel eligibility in Google Discover.

FAQ — add to pages with FAQ sections. One of the highest-CTR rich result types: Google can expand your Q&A answers directly in search results, doubling your SERP footprint without a ranking change.

Product — add to product or service pages. Enables price, availability, and review stars in search results.

BreadcrumbList — add to any page to show the navigation path (Home › Blog › Article) in search results. Helps users understand your site structure and slightly improves CTR.

Common JSON-LD mistakes to avoid

Don't add schema to content that isn't visible on the page — Google's guidelines require structured data to reflect actual page content. Don't mark up every page as an Article if it's a product page. Always validate with the Google Rich Results Test before deploying. And remember: JSON-LD doesn't directly boost rankings, but higher CTR from rich results does improve your organic traffic.
